Accountants for owner-managed businesses

Your numbers, explained by someone who knows your business.

Hazel Signal handles year-end accounts, tax and bookkeeping for small companies and sole traders — on a fixed monthly fee, with one named accountant who answers your questions in plain English.

Fixed monthly fee

Agreed before we start and reviewed once a year. No hourly billing and no invoice for asking a question.

One named accountant

You work with the same person from your first call onwards, so nothing has to be explained twice.

Cloud bookkeeping

We work in the software you already use, or help you move to it without losing a year of history.

Services

Everything a small business needs filed, checked and understood

Take the whole set or just the part you are struggling with. Most clients start with year-end accounts and add bookkeeping once the rhythm is working.

Year-end accounts

Statutory accounts prepared, reviewed with you before filing, and submitted on time — with a short summary of what changed since last year.

Tax returns

Corporation tax and self assessment handled together, so personal and company positions are planned as one picture rather than two surprises.

Bookkeeping

Monthly reconciliation, tidy categories and a ledger that actually matches the bank — so your reports are worth reading.

Payroll

Payslips, submissions and pension filings run on a set date each month, including starters, leavers and directors' salaries.

VAT

Registration, scheme choice and quarterly returns, with a check on whether the scheme you joined is still the right one.

Advisory

Cash flow, pricing and profit conversations at the points that matter: hiring, raising fees, buying equipment or taking on premises.

How we work

Four steps from first call to a year you can plan around

  1. Introductory call

Thirty minutes to hear what your business does, what is currently filed, and where the pressure is. No charge and no commitment.

  2. Written proposal

A short scope with a fixed monthly fee, the deadlines we take responsibility for, and what we need from you each month.

  3. Handover and setup

We collect records from your previous accountant, connect your bookkeeping and agree the dates everything is due.

  4. Ongoing reporting

Regular figures with a short note on what they mean, plus a review before each filing so nothing arrives as a surprise.

Who we help

Built for businesses where the owner still signs the invoices

We keep the practice small on purpose. These are the situations we are set up to handle well.

  • Limited companies with one to twenty people and a director who wants the accounts explained, not just filed.
  • Sole traders and freelancers whose income moves month to month and who need tax set aside properly.
  • Trades and services juggling job costs, subcontractors and VAT across a busy season.
  • Studios and consultancies billing in projects and retainers, where revenue recognition needs a steady hand.
  • Shops and online sellers with stock, platform fees and mixed VAT rates to untangle each quarter.
  • First-year businesses that need the structure, records and deadlines set up correctly from the start.

About the practice

A small practice, deliberately

Hazel Signal was started after years of watching good businesses receive their accounts nine months late, with a covering letter nobody could decode. We thought the useful part of the job — telling an owner what the numbers mean while there is still time to act — was the part being skipped.

So the practice stays small. We take on a limited number of clients, keep the same accountant on each one, and write in sentences rather than schedules. If something in your figures looks worth a conversation, you hear from us before the deadline, not after it.

We are equally happy to say when you do not need us yet. Plenty of first-year businesses need an hour of setup advice rather than a monthly retainer, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the bigger package.

Common questions

Before you get in touch

Is it difficult to switch from my current accountant?

No. You tell your current accountant you are moving, and we handle the professional clearance and records request from there. In most cases the only thing you need to do is reply to one email confirming the transfer.

How is the fee worked out?

We quote a fixed monthly fee based on the services you need, the volume of transactions and how tidy the records currently are. It is agreed in writing before any work starts and reviewed once a year, so it never changes without a conversation.

What happens if a deadline is close when I join?

Tell us on the first call. If a filing is imminent we will say plainly whether we can take it on in time, and if we cannot, we will tell you that rather than accept the work and hope.

Which bookkeeping software do you work with?

We work with the mainstream cloud packages and with spreadsheets where that is genuinely all a business needs. If your current setup is causing more work than it saves, we will suggest a move and handle the migration with you.

Do we need to meet in person?

Only if you want to. Most clients work with us entirely by video call and shared documents, which keeps reviews short and easy to schedule around a working week.
